Description
Thick fog hid landmarks, and muted sounds. In the dark pre-dawn silence, I waited at the impoundment known to host Tundra Swans (Cygnus columbianus), hoping they would be present. The sky slowly brightened as morning began. Wisps of color appeared high in the sky as the sun approached the horizon, then crept lower as the shadow of the earth receded. Details slowly emerged. One by one, swans began squawking, beginning their day. For just a few minutes, nature balanced between dark and light, gray and colorful, silence and cacophony, blurred and detailed. A January morning in Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge.
