Description
This male pileated woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) hunting for insects below the tree bark in Cades Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park. His calls caught my attention as I drove near. With his brilliant red head, he was easy to spot working this roadside tree. He paid no attention to me! I was able to walk thru a grassy field to get the sunlight on him. With my shallow focus, the field across the road was rendered as this soft background blur.
