Artist's Description

A cheerful sunflower (Helianthus annuus) in eastern North Carolina. It's widely believed that sunflowers turn to follow the sun. This is true for immature blossoms. But once a blossom matures, it stays oriented eastward. This allows the early morning sun to quickly warm the flower, and increases the pollinator visits.
