Description
A male Blue Grosbeak (Passerina caerulea) in breeding plumage, at the edge of a field in Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge in eastern North Carolina. Per All About Birds, "Blue Grosbeaks are characteristic species of old fields beginning to grow back into woodland. They breed in areas covered in a mix of grass, forbs, and shrubs, with usually a few taller trees. In more-arid areas, they often use the shrubby growth along watercourses." With this affinity to waterways, they are common along the lowland canals of eastern North Carolina.
