Artist's Description
A King Rail (Rallus elegans), a chicken-sized marsh bird, is generally well hidden among tall reeds. In my experience, they are most easily found by recognizing their call, a low repeated kek-kek-kek grunt. With patient waiting and watching, they will often reveal themselves. Early morning at Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, eastern North Carolina.
