Artist's Description
In the 1920, Rhode Island industrialist and avid waterfowl hunter Edward Collings Knight, Jr. had this magnificent copper-roofed, 21,000 square foot vacation home built in the then desolate northern Outer Banks of North Carolina. Today, the home is called The Whalehead Club, and is part of Currituck Heritage Park, in Corolla, NC.
This early evening view shows the home decorated for the Christmas season.
This photograph is an HDR - High Dynamic Range image, made by combining photos varying in exposure by six stops. This permitted the lights on the front of the building, the inside lighting, the Christmas tree and window candles, the indigo high in the sky, and the sunset pink along the horizon all to be maintained in the image. Lights on the trees on the both ends of the building were "burned in" to balance them in the scene. Since it was necessary to tip the lens up to shoot the building and sky, there was an apparent leaning-back effect on the building. I correct...
