The Palamedes swallowtail (Papilio palamedes) is found in the coastal plains of the southeastern states from southeast Virginia to Louisiana and Texas and all of mainland Florida. They choose moist wooded areas and swamps. This butterfly is sipping nectar from a thistle deep in Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, near the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
