Three sandhill cranes (Antigone canadensis) appear in the first week of November, the third year I've observed them at Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge in eastern North Carolina. Despite their appearance in small groups over the past few years, they are rare here, several hundreds of miles east of their typical migratory path.
